Avatar: The Last Airbender (known as Avatar: The Legend of Aang in Europe) is a video game based on the television series of the same name. It was developed by THQ Studio Australia and published by THQ for Game Boy Advance, GameCube, Nintendo DS, PC, PlayStation Portable, PlayStation 2, Wii, and Xbox. The DS and GBA versions were developed by TOSE and Halfbrick, respectively. The game was released in 2006 and was a launch title for the Wii in Western territories.
It was followed by a sequel, Avatar: The Last Airbender – The Burning Earth, a year later.
Why It Sucks
- Shallow and repetitive combat
- Underdeveloped RPG elements.
- Simplified version of the series universe.
- No co-op mode.
- Many of the missions are fetch quests.
- Large amount of backtracking.
- Small number of enemy types.
- Health and chi (special attack power) recharge when you're not being attacked, which makes fighting even the hardest of enemies very easy.
- Boss battles are also easy because they follow a basic pattern that never changes at any point in the fight.
- Forgettable soundtrack.
- NPC characters repeat the same few quotes regardless of what happens onscreen.
- The Wii version's motion controls don't add anything to the game and are unresponsive.
- Cel-shaded visuals capture the look of the show.
- The main characters are voiced by their actors from the TV series.
- The "Four Nations" tile minigame is fun to play.
The game received mixed reviews, with Metacritic scores of 64 for GBA, 63 for Xbox and DS, 60 for GameCube, 59 for PS2, 57 for PSP, and 56 for Wii. Despite this, it was a financial success for THQ, selling a million copies worldwide by February 2007. The game even achieved "Greatest Hits" status on the PS2.
