Ruff Trigger: The Vanocore Conspiracy is a 2006 action-platform video game developed by Playstos Entertainment and published by Natsume in North America and by ZOO Digital Publishing in Europe for the PlayStation 2. The game was released in North America on June 28, 2006 and in Europe on August 25, 2006.

Why it Sucks

  1. The back of the box mistakenly says that a save file takes 110MB! A PS2 Memory card only holds up to 8MB.
  2. The game is an obvious rip-off of the Ratchet & Clank series. The game very conveniently began development the same year the first Ratchet & Clank game was released.
    1. It is a Third-person shooter mixed with platforming. However the weapon selection is very lame and generic, and to unlock them you need to level up which takes too long. Weapon names such as 'Mega Gun' and 'Devastator' also obviously copied from Ratchet & Clank.
    2. Soundtrack sounds almost plagiarized from Ratchet & Clank.
    3. The plot is a complete rip-off of Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando. Genetically engineered pets that become destructive and aggressive threaten the entire galaxy and late in the game mutate into big monsters?  Not subtle at all!
    4. Floppy discs are the equivalent of Bolts and are often obtained by smashing crates.
    5. Ruff goes through planets, except there's only three rather dull planets, in contrast to the many diverse worlds in Ratchet & Clank.
    6. Health pickups look the exact same as Nanotech pickups. The only difference is that they're colored red.
  3. The game also rips off the "Dark Jak" form from Jak II with Ruff's Werewolf form, except the Werewolf can be used at any time without any restriction.
    • Ruff's Werewolf form has next to no effect on the plot. He seems unfazed by the horrible mutation, and Cecily, Ruff's pilot and potential love interest, is still interested in him despite the fact that he is now part monster.
    • Werewolf Ruff's claw attack is a complete ripoff of Wolverine's claws.
  4. You can spam the attack button in the Werewolf form to stunlock every enemy in the game until they die.
  5. The core mechanic of rescuing "Piglots" is very tedious. All you do is pick them up and take them to a portal over and over until a locked door opens. The game tries to have variety by using different types of Piglots but it's not real variety. Regardless of the type of Piglot, you're still just picking them up and taking them to the door. To make this even more tedious, you can only pickup one Piglot at a time so you constantly have to run back-and-forth to bring all of them to the door one by one.
  6. Contrived training sections in the early stages of the game.
  7. Lame attempts to be edgy by constantly saying minor swear words like "hell" or "damn".
  8. The main character Ruff is a moronic idiot. One particularly infamous example: When Ruff finds a box filled with a clearly toxic substance in chemistry tubes next to a crashed ship, he immediately drinks the substance!
  9. Awkward controls with floaty jumping.
  10. Poor voice acting.
  11. Enemies take too much ammo to defeat.
  12. Enemies can't hit you as long as you're moving, regardless of how slow you're walking.
  13. Armageddon, a recurring boss battle, is extremely easy. He literally can be defeated in less than 10 seconds every single time! He also looks like a discount Hulk.
    1. Minor plot hole: The scientist turns into Armageddon due to the same substance that turns Ruff into a Werewolf, but how come Ruff can control his Werewolf form without any problem while scientist can't control Armageddon?
  14. Frustrating bosses.
  15. Use of Comic Sans in the menus.
  16. Cheap, frustrating vehicle sections, with poor controls and stupidly implemented time limits. Impending explosions and the like do not even occur if the time runs out; failure merely issues the message 'Try Again'.
  17. Lazy ending.
